The title says it all. I was sad to hear about Lily who is on Youtube with the handle Polaris Northern Star. Seen her post before but didn't take much notice.
From what is found online, Lily is a Melanau from Sarawak and in 2011 she had escaped via Johor Bahru to Singapore. This was with a friend who believed she was economically exploited and abused in Johor Bahru. Unfortunately while at Johor Bahru, some police officer had abused Lily physically and locked her up. Her passport is confirmed real by local authorities and recently she have obtained refugee status and is living somewhere in Europe.
The Borneo Post on 12th May 2018 published "Alleged refugee of Sarawakian Melanau descent pleads for help", and made a request for anyone who knows her to come forward.
Astro Awani on 13th May 2018 published "Dakwaan 'pelarian' Malaysia terkandas di Jerman masih dalam siasatan" that an investigation by Immigration is ongoing. This reflects that there is some truth.
However on 15th May 2018, theStar, a local Malaysian daily reported that Johor state police chief Comm Datuk Mohd Khalil Kader Mohd has dismissed the accusations as untrue. The article "A Malaysian refugee in Europe? Her claims are not true, say Johor cops" comes after Lily's Youtube video made its rounds congratulating Malaysia on its recent change of government. Unfortunately, at the same time, Chief Comm is giving out Lily's personal passport information to the media. Doesn't PDPA apply to the police, maybe there is an exception in this case? Similar case of how the previous government minister's exposure to the media of personal identity card information of Dr. Mahathir Mohamad, the recently elected Prime Minister of Malaysia. The police did confirm there were police reports made by Lily and the father, while mentioning that its a family problem. This again indicates that there is some truth to what Lily have been publishing online. Including corroboration that she is a Malaysian and the timeline of the story.
Though the Star could not contact Lily, there is a response on the same day at Polaris Youtube channel. On 5th May 2018, the response was titled "Update about JB Police spokesperson comments in public about me" which thanked the Star reporter and some of the good police while trying to describe the harassment received.
Its expected that there will be some skeptical responses by readers, but death and other threats seems overboard. I can't understand what motivates people to go about attacking a situation that is already confirmed happened by the Johor police, though there is a discrepancy in the story. Posting on the Polaris Norther Star Youtube channel indicate the varied level of responses they have received.
I hope the police reports made by Lily's father and its relevance with this case will bring some light in the near future. Currently forums like Reddit r/malaysia and Lowyat Kopitiam channel (which the discussion is now closed) have majority saying its a scam. Time will tell.
