If you are not doing DIY that often, drilling might not be a natural nor easy task. I found a good read and reference by Eugene Brennan while learning to drill on my own.
Drilling is just taking a drill, fit that long screw like thing called "bit" and turn the power on. Put a bit of force while the bit turns slow or fast and you have a hole.
Not all bits are the same, and its best to use the proper bit type for specific surfaces. The drill itself have wire powered or cordless for low power or high power.

General steps to drilling:
- Mark the drill spot with a pencil. Use a nail and with a hammer lightly hit the nail to make a dent at the drill spot.
- With the bit fitted into the drill, start with a slow drill until there is a hole.
- Remainder of the hole you could use a faster/hammer drill until the desired depth.
- Remove the drill from the hole.
