Found lots of white growth around the stem of a potted mulberry plant. Initial observation shows its some form of cotton like, powdery stuff and doesn't seem to be moving.
I don't see any moving bugs. This is because it is known that there are lots of bugs within the fruits (see here) which is why you should not eat it raw.
Its growing more and more over the last few days. What could they be?
From the photos below;
Circle (A) shows the individual white stuff. Circle in (B) shows the stem when I scratch off the white stuff.
Indications (1): Seen 4 leaves.
Some leaves are turning brown + yellow
Causes: Cercospora moricola
Indications (2): Not present
The fruit itself is browning
Causes: Ciboria carunculoides (popcorn
Indications (3): Yes, scattered throughout the whole plant
Cotton like white mass
Causes: Pseudococcus spp or Mealy bugs
Finally identified the stuff, they are bugs. Time to call in the ant, who are natural protector of these plants as they will attack the bugs. Alternatively, its time to call out the old pot to brew an insecticidal soap to spray on the plants. Very likely, those with asthmatic tendency will have to take precautions.
What are Mealy bugs?
"Mealybugs are insects in the family Pseudococcidae, unarmored scale insects found in moist, warm climates. They are considered pests as they feed on plant juices of greenhouse plants, house plants and subtropical trees and also act as a vector for several plant diseases."
